“A Story to My Son”

Artist Statement

After becoming a father and being confronted with my own experiences from my childhood, I embarked upon an emotionally raw yet creative journey within my painting practice. Every painting in this series, complete with each brush stroke brought back visions from the past, prompting deeper reflection and understanding of the events that formed my identity. With each piece, I felt myself becoming increasingly more open and confident about evolving in this situation. I decided to constructively use this process, not only to delve into personal history, but also to further the exploration of the Wabi Sabi series. As I proudly present this exhibition "A Story To My Son", I mentally prepare myself for meaningful discussions between me and my family with the general public as we continue our growth together; this sense of self-discovery will remain with me throughout life's ever-changing phases.

Albert Gonzales sat with Rene Barilleaux (head curator at The McNay Art Museum) during his pop-up exhibition for DreamWeek SA, titled, "A Story To My Son." Here they discuss Gonzales' start as an artist, vision with his series of paintings titled "Wabi Sabi," what drives him to create, and much more.
